Located between 1550 m and 2720 m, les Orres is a holliday complex active winter through summer. On the Adret side it's the original village and on the Ubac side it's the ski resort.
The origin of the word "les Orres" is found in the latine root hooreum : wheat storehouse, because the flat land above this "chef-lieu" was favourable for cereal cultivation. Climbing alongside the Vachères torrent, you can access the big and the small "Vallon" (small valley), famed high mountain pastures since immemorial times. The living conditions in these hamlets is particular and lead to the construction of stout houses with sun exposed balconies and multi-pane roofs. With modernity on one side with it's ski resort, and the authenticity of an old mountain village on the other side, it is the perfect comprimise to join "Savoir-vivre" and sport activities. This Cmplex, practical for famillies who want everything available on the spot, offers an exceptional setting to satisfy all your leisure tastes.

On this occasion a religious ceremony is held in the open air at the location of the "grand vallon". Often the bishop would come and give the benediction to the herds before heading for the high mountain pastures. Initially the sheep producers gathered together to share a meal, today this event is open all those that wish to participate. At first an Alpin Horn serenade is given while the fair comity serves an aperitif, every body than shares his picnic in a joyful atmosphere. Games and a "boules" contest are organized in the afternoon. |
