Embrun

Capital of the Cottian Alps before our era, then episcopal city, Embrun nicknamed "Nice of the Alps" for the quality of life it offers from the height of it's rock. It is today a tourstic city of 6724 inhabitants .

The charm of AN old town.

A walk through the old city is a like paging through a history book at every step. Fountains, sculptures, multi century buildings, halls, ... Can be admired in particular : the Notre Dame du Réal Cathedral (XIIth an XIIIth) and the Brune Tower (XIIIth).

A stop in the gardens of the archdiocese, is a must-do in order to embrace the panoramic view over the Durance valley and the vegetable gardens of the "Plaine du Roc" (Rock plain).

Towering the city, Mount Guillaume, protects benevolently the life of the Embrunais (a pilgrimage takes place very year in July).

A"NEARLY" MERIDIONAL lifestyle

Shady squares, pastel coloured frontages , soothing fountains, all invite you to stroll and stop on the terrace of a café. The Meridional game of petanque is already played here under the plane trees, even if a "boulodrome" allows the enthousiasts to play "Lyonnaise" style on it's sand bed.

A small bit of history

From the arrival of the celts, to the passage of the romans; from the dawn of christianism with St Marcellin, first bishop of Embrun in 354, to the birth of the archdiocese in th 9th century; from the County of Provence to the kingdom of France; From the  Dauphins of the Viennois to the royal Dauphins; just a few of the historical stage points which  left their mark in this alpine earth.
