Les Ardoisières (the slate quarries)

Slate is a sedimentary rock, formed on the surface of the earth through transport and accumulation of other rock fragments. The slates were extracted out of galleries dug into the cliff.

Dim light was given by burning an oily stick which gave out a thick smoke that blackened the face of the diggers.

The slate quarrys are not in production any longer in Crévoux, but many houses still have this traditional roof.
